"SLEEP ON IT"

A SHORT FILM

We worked closely with Director Nathan Breton on his short film sleep on it, which came to us with NO sound whatsoever. It was up to us to create the world we witness Doug (our main character) venturing through, as he discovers the peculiar nature of a new mattress he buys.

As we looked at the silent footage, we quickly realized our job was to animate what we were seeing with sound — to truly bring life to the picture. We needed to thread the needle of reality, as the film presents a variety of surreal sequences, playing off a raw New York City soundscape.

We created a character out of Doug’s bed through sound — as it plays a larger part in this piece than one may think. We dug in to foley and were thourough in our approach to hit every detail of motion we see on screen. As the color and visuals are very descriptive in their own way, we knew the relationship sound had to a visual shift in atmosphere was vital. Thus, our design changed depending on the type of day our main character was having. The sheets on his bed sounded different, we rolled of brightness of certain soundscape characteristics, even the tone of people around our main character were altered. Our sound and music supports story, and we're proud to never have lost sight of that during this project.
