THE SUBJECT
LANIE ZIPOY
The Subject follows Phil Waterhouse, a successful white documentary filmmaker as he deals with the fallout from his last film, which caught the murder of a Black teen on tape. While working on his newest documentary project for a major TV network, someone films Phil’s every more, threatening his idyllic life.
The Subject marks Lanie Zipoy‘s feature film directorial debut. The film stars Jason Biggs (Orange Is The New Black, American Pie), Emmy nominee Aunjanue Ellis (If Beale Street Could Talk, The Clark Sisters), Anabelle Acosta (Ballers, Quantico), Carra Patterson (Straight Outta Compton, Broadway’s Jitney), Nile Bullock (Chicago Med, Orange Is The New Black) and Caleb Eberhardt (Black Christmas, Betty). The script is written by Chisa Hutchinson.

The Subject grounds the audience in a variety of realities. A large challenge when it came to the sound for this film was the transitions + switches between those realities. From DV footage, to real world, to archival doc style, we built out environments that would support the edit and seamlessly move us through one world to the next.
